Introduction

An enterprise capability map summarizes what an enterprise needs to be able to do to succeed. The map shows what capabilities the enterprise needs, not who carries them out, or how. Agreement on high level capabilities is a foundation for subsequent analysis and planning of business processes and technology solutions.

Enterprises have different maps, as their goals and size vary. A capability map can extend to an enterprise that includes multiple organizations, such as a university system or consortium.

The Reference Capability Map below summarizes the capabilities covered in the RATL. This is a reference map; in your planning process, you will likely remove, add, or move capabilities on the map related to teaching and learning.

Capabilities in the Reference Capability Map are divided into three broad areas:

  • Strategic Capabilities are high level outcomes based on strategic goals, setting the direction for other capabilities on the map.
  • Core Capabilities are what the teaching and learning enterprise does to deliver its strategic capabilities, distinguishing itself from other enterprises and interacting with people and organizations.
  • Supporting Capabilities enable core capabilities, are often shared across other capabilities, and are often common to similar enterprises.
