Agenda:

Minutes:

  • Futures2
  • T&I Accomplishments Report
    • Will be final in about a week.
    • Kevin had 3 asks for the group.
      • Encourage all to share with colleagues in other arenas.
      • Review and reflect in a way how we may go about changing the report- design.
      • Might trigger a meeting topic for this group for during the year.

Kristi added that this was such a great report, and it tells a terrific story.

  • There will be a gathering of InCommon Steering folks and NET+ PAG members that will attend Community Exchange in Atlanta
  • Kevin reported that the total community FTE hours last year was over 2800. The community has worked hard to improve Baseline expectations through BaseCAMP, ACAMP and all the training we do.

  • Browser Changes

The browser vendors would like to better accommodate user privacy requirements and remove tracking across sites. Their approach called Federation Credential Management (or FedCM), threatens to break how InCommon Federation (and other R&E federations) work. The technology under discussion is called Fed CM or Federation Credential Management.  For more information, see https://developer.chrome.com/en/docs/privacy-sandbox/fedcm/At Tech Ex 2022, several leading international identity experts discussed our shared concerns and decided to approach the Google Chrome team to educate them about our work and determine if there was common ground. In early March, representatives from our community convened with Google Chrome and Firefox engineers in Mountain View, CA to discuss the issues for us and suggestions for alternative models.

Two approaches were defined at the meeting:

As a next step, many of the people involved with FedCM will attend IIW (Internet identity workshop) this spring and continue to refine the proposals.

  • How close are the interfaces to being able to be tried?
The solution that the hackathon developed is simple, lightweight, and easy to put in effect.  Browsers developers will inhibit any other kind of mechanism.  The argument for having the browser get out of the way is strong. What higher ed is doing would help solve the problem for other industries. If this simple solution gets rejected, we will know that there is something else going on.

  • Will Apple be at an upcoming meeting?  It would be much better to have all browsers act the same way.
Apple does not typically participate in open forums but have been known to implement guidance anyway.

Nicole will provide updates as things develop.  Our international R&E Federation community is having an impact beyond higher Ed in large part with the help of Heather Flannagan.

For Steering Members following Seamless Access development, our community representatives involved in the browser discussions believe that the proposed solution complements the SA technology approach under development.
