 Research Organization :

John Krienke talked about the resource that was located (OECD) with definitions of R&D. The current and new proposed definitions were discussed.  There were concerns about the word "attests" by several members.  It was asked if we need to include both research institutions AND research funders in this change?  It feels like we may be overloading this clause a bit to include both here, as it was thought they seemed different.

The group wanted more clarity. John discussed that  the number that have come through as a research category currently are  39 .

Group is looking at rounding out the definition and there was continued discussion on how we determine if they fall into the category and if the definition plays a role that might discourage someone from joining. It was mentioned that we shouldn't be putting too much pressure on who joins if we are looking to grow a federation.  Our objective should not be to exclude organizations -  rather to see more people come into the federation and then if they behave badly they are removed.  It was suggested that we broaden the membership criteria. This thought was liked by several others in the group.   Discussion to be continued at our next meeting.

Steering committee recruitment :

Request for nominations went out last week. Dee ( already stepped down), Ted Hanss and Chris Sedore  will be  rolling off this year along with 2 terms that can be continued meaning we would have at least 3 seats available.   Process would be that Steering provides Kevin with 2 names per slot available and he would bring those to Howard and the board for approval.

Eduroam Update:

Sara Jeanes gave a brief update to the status of Eduroam including the following

  • Consultation on eduroam-US Best Practices Guide
  • Moving to an internet2 operated infrastructure in the month of November
  • Increase the amount of scaling around eduroam and building out functions for K-12
  • Communications will be coming out soon with no need for end users to do anything.
  • There was discussion on the recent notices and press pieces about vulnerabilities relating to wireless misconfigurations in some enterprises.  "When a network with the same WiFi name appears, Android devices will not check whether this certificate is trustworthy or not, and will not even notify the user about the certificate before connecting. When auto connect is enabled for a network using a Server Certificate, Android devices will automatically attempt to connect to this network and send your stored credentials, without ever checking the legitimacy of the certificate, or letting the user know anything might be wrong."
  • TedH:  shared from a post: “the problem is not the fault of any technical vulnerability from Eduroam’s services or technology, but from erroneous configuration instructions that the universities’ own network administrators provide to those setting up access, they said.”
  • It was suggested that Internet2 generate a communication regarding the security reports to clarify the situation for concerned eduroam institutions or their users.
