I had the idea of writing this "book" - a consolidation of documentation on Grouper - after implementing Grouper at Cardiff University and having joined the developer team to contribute some code. It seemed clear to me that the best way for me to make a difference to the project would be to add to the documentation, so that more people could come to understand what Grouper is, what it can do, and how to implement it. As I write, I'm halfway through a course to become a sailing instructor, so you may have to forgive the odd nautical reference.

This book is divided into four sections:

  1. Introductory information to enable you to understand what Grouper is and what it can do from a high-level. After reading this section, you should have a fair idea of whether Grouper could fit you requirements
  2. The Grouper Core section contains practical information about getting Grouper up and running in a test environment to test its features, and then planning and installing into a live installation. It also covers administrative tasks and should be enough to get a Grouper system up and running
  3. Getting more from Grouper covers integration of Grouper into your environment. It includes interacting programmatically with Grouper and provisioning of groups to external systems. This section should enable you to make the most of your Grouper installation
  4. Deep dive into Grouper covers more advanced topics, including a look at the Grouper architecture and how you can contribute to further development.
