Notes:

Calls for Operational updates:

  • Nicole - FM updates for next week
  • Albert - Discovery service, spinning up project to replace the current discovery page with the Seamless Access discovery service; Albert will provide a more complete status update at the next meeting
  • Ann - InCommon is looking to improve operations, and there is an inCommon’s futures 2 strategy report (current draft has been emailed, Google feedback document), asking for folks to review the report and provide comments, these will be incorporated into the final planning process. This is high-level, how to engage the community, etc. This will be a shared plan, refocus what we are doing with a shared set of objectives. InCommon wants to make sure we get feedback from our core contributors.  Open office hours at 11:00 am eastern tomorrow 01/12
  • Kevin - This is a bit different than before (above), like going to the doctor while feeling well, to get a better sense of how the health of InCommon can improve in general. InCommon’s 20th birthday. Do you need more time? This is just getting started. Will be shaping the next 5 years.
  • Keith - This isn’t new news (above) necessarily, this has been in emails recently.
  • Keith - any more agenda?
    • Mark - There was an organization that tried to join the community (they were also an eduroam customer), the public community page wasn’t correct ?
    • The InCommon web site’s organization listing is incorrectly displaying IdP listing information, particularly for organizations that are both eduroam subscriber and InCommon Participants. The defect is such that Cirrus cannot rely on the display to verify registration information using web site data.
    • Nicole described why this is happening. Data integrity problem between solutions, it’s not a quick fix, and will likely require rethinking of how this data is curated today. Salesforce changed the numbering scheme in the middle of implementations, so there are a lot of data mismatch issues. This is more of a SalesForce issue, not really an InCommon issue, other than InCommon is impacted. Showed up primarily when importing eduroam.
    • Mark: There is a reputational risk because one of the purposes of InCommon is to have reliable metadata. The metadata is reliable but is there reputational risk that the website is reflecting data that is not reliable.
  • Keith - allow re-introductions, but keep it brief
    • There are a few liaisons to different groups (below)
    • This group TAC, we offer guidance for operations and products, etc. Everyone should read the charter.
    • We report to steering, Policy body for the InCommon LLC
    • Any TAC recommendations are made to the steering committee. A little bit more than an advisory committee, but they also represent the community.
    • CTAB - Community Trust and Advisory Board - Handles the policy recommendations to the steering committee.
  •  CACTI - Nicole - Came up out of the trusted access platform, partially the successor to MACE. MACE was the founding arch group, a few years ago MACE handed off to REFEDS, and CACTI
  • CACTI - It’s architectural, but also more of a community view. (Nicole) It will convene technical working groups. It helps coordinate technology changes in the wild that would impact InCommon products and services. Addresses how changes in the technical ecosystem affect us.
  • Some additional groups, Eduroam advisory committee (Was charted by CACTI for example); Software Integration Working Group for Trust Access Platform.
  • Quarterly advisory call - Chairs and Vice Chairs of those groups and Ann and Kevin attend.
  • We need liaison volunteers to attend meetings with CACTI and CTAB (Not asking for volunteers today).
    • CACTI meets January 31st 1:30 Eastern - 3:30 Eastern. Every 4 weeks.
    • CTAB meets Tuesdays every other week. Same time as the TAC call (1:00 PM Eastern)
  • SME - We have some non-voting members but have specific expertise TAC benefits from when working on work items. TAC on an annual basis invite these individuals to attend TAC calls and to assist with work items. Question is if there are any any objections or questions regarding inviting as SMEs
    • David Walker - has been one of our SMEs for several years.
    • Marina from REN-ISAC - She joined us as an SME.
    • Eric Goodman - Recently stepped down due to retirement, but still wants to be involved in the community. Considering bringing him on as an SME.
    • There were no objections voiced for the stated SME’s.
  • Call time - should this be changed? However this group is crossing 11-12 time zones
    • Silence is consent
    • Are there any significant conflicts for members?
  • Work Plan - Last year’s TAC left us in good shape with a fruitful list of suggested work plan items for this year. Things from last year and items good for us to keep an eye on or tackle. We have items we monitor every year as well - e.g., the HECVAT.
    • New members should review the work plan and decide if they want to make some suggestions or add items.
    • Last year we let everyone voice their top three items we should be working on.
    • We can use last years process as a template for this year unless we decide it should be done differently
  • Albert - Add your “plus 1” or “minus 1” to work plan items to help the group identify the greatest and least need.
  • Albert - Reminder, we transcribe the notes, then we need 5 members to approve the notes before they can be made public
