Like many universities, the University of Chicago always has a large number of active scholarly and administrative collaborative activities involving members of the campus community. A large fraction of those activities also involve persons from other higher eds and other organizations. Increasingly, the Blackboard-based learning management system known as "Chalk" is being used to provide an online locus for these activities. With time, more tools are allied with Chalk and made available to an increasing set of "organizations" or non-course groups appearing on the system. Federated access to Chalk and federated management of federated membership in its organizations enable intra- and inter-institutional activities to be supported.
