- Background: http://www.oclc.org
- Long time identity "geek", mainly from the web 2.0 end of things
- Joined OCLC 18 mo ago.
- 1300 employees worldwide; managed by co-op of libraries
- Keeper of library technologies that need to be managed and controlled.
- Maintain Dewey decimal system and CATS (largest union catalogue of bibliographical records in the world)
- Discussion today focuses on his belief that IDM can be implemented broader than current use by OCLC, benefitting smaller, less-technically oriented organizations to get involved in IDM.
- Looking for reinforcement of this premise.
Current Activities-
OCLC currently provides some services, including electronic journals, digital archiving, and contract cataloging.
- Interoperability issues are a primary concern.
- Library services have been built around Shib-type systems.
- Grappling with need for stand-alone or federated management service for broader library community.
- These challenges resonate with attendees on the call.
Questions/Comments
1. Is there a funding resource for these activities?
A. Feels there will be more opportunities for funding as this is being looked at on a statewide basis.
2. GSA interested in higher levels of assurance. The next step up is very simple credential checks. Do you feel this could be a funding resource?
A. Government is trying to stay away from a national ID. The big challenge for ID providers are the unknown liabilities in serving in that role.
3. I heard there is a need out there for these type of services. How do I convey this need exists (in a quantifiable manner) to my management?
A. Not until some states have gone down this path will we know what you need to build a solid business case.If there are people with real needs who can describe their problems and request I solve it will help demonstrate there is a real need.
4. To what extent have you brought this up with InCommon?
A. InCommon pointed me here.
5. You're talking multi-protocol then?
A. Yes, looking to provide federated access.
6. Vision is everyone has an identity issued by trusted sources, and others can associate.
7. Andy's approach would be appropriate in higher ed as well, for example, with consortia schools.
8. What is the value proposition for K-12?
A. Being able to handle licensing options will help drive this and increasing K-12's readiness to implement.
