DISCUSSION

K12 Access and Federation (KAF) - InCommon effort update

- KAF was formed in 2012 to examine how Incommon can support K12
Federation
- KAF's recent focus has been on the Quilt / InCommon Federation Workshop, Feb 7-8, in La
Jolla, CA.
- This workshop will allow technical and policy reps from the regionals to
develop models for work.

Comments:

- In addition to the regionals, the state university systems also might be
able to support the effort of extending federation down to K12
- Once the February workshop is complete, some of the future work may be
delegated to existing working groups

Rodney: At the EDUCAUSE regional conference in Baltimore, a
Concern was voiced that an organization must be a member of InCommon to take
advantage of Net+ services. This is potentially a challenge for small
schools in HE, and for K12.

SteveO:  The InCommon membership now includes numerous small
institutions. http://www.incommon.org/participants/

- In addition, eventually there may be a consortium or tiered model or some other way to allow
schools to join.

- There are webinars on Jan. 18 and Jan. 25 in preparation for the Quilt / InCommon Federation Workshop workshop.
- Email SteveO if you'd like more info.

Roadmap and Use Cases

 https://spaces.at.internet2.edu/display/K12FedIAMTF/K-12+Roadmap

- Mark has been working on use caes and roadmap and has reorganized some of the content
- Mark has taken a stab at writing an intro
- Use cases or case studies would be very helpful
- After this roadmap is more developed, it would be good to turn it into a document to add to the Primer. http://www.cosn.org/Portals/7/docs/Publications/CoSNK-12ID5-15.pdf

Stephan said that the DC Schools may have some use cases, and would like Mark's input.

[AI] (Stephan) will share use case outline or preliminary writeup with Mark.
