Discussion

Update on pilot planning stemming from Quilt/InCommon Federation Workshop

Workshop Summary and Next Steps (PDF) http://www.thequilt.net/images/stories/attachments/quilt%20workshop%20summary%20and%20next%20steps.pdf

Goal / purpose of the pilot program is to flesh out and validate some business and technical models that can help move federation into K12 and community colleges.  It is expected that the pilots will generate case studies / documentation around federation, to provide reference material and guidance to others moving forward.

MikeD reported that Nebraska has been looking at federation issues for several years.
They are excited about InCommon and the pilots.
The Nebraska team found information on the InCommon website to be helpful and also the Primer   http://www.cosn.org/Portals/7/docs/Publications/CoSNK-12ID5-15.pdf
They hope to develop documentation to contribute back to the community.

Q: Are there pilot happening already?
A: The planned pilots are the first under the InCommon Quilt umbrella, but some districts around the country are most likely already piloting or moving forward with federated models

-There will be further discussion of the InCommon Quilt pilots at the Internet2 Annual Meeting in Arlington VA, April 21-25.
-We will keep this list informed as things progress with the pilots

-Several of the potential pilots, including Nebraska and NCSA/Illinois are interested in inBloom https://www.inbloom.org/
On our Wed. May 15 call, there will be a representative from inBloom for discussion on their offerings and the role of federated identity.

Feel free to invite colleagues to join these calls. Instructions for joining this list are found at cosn.org/FederatedIdentity

Use Cases

Everyone is encouraged to contribute to the use cases at https://spaces.at.internet2.edu/display/K12FedIAMTF/Use+Cases

The expectation is that useful documentation, use cases, case studies will result from the upcoming pilots.
