Blog from December, 2011

InCommon and Internet2 will be closed the week of December 26 and will reopen on
January 3. Last year we had no requests for metadata to be signed over the
holiday week. We hope your holidays this year are just as restful, but in case
you're busy trimming new metadata...

This year we plan to be available mid-day on Wednesday, December 28, in case
anyone is in need of metadata updates. If we receive any update requests prior
to noon (ET) on December 28, we will sign metadata that afternoon. Requests
received after Dec. 28 (noon) will be signed on January 3, 2012.

Thanks to all InCommon Identity Providers (218) and Service Providers (692) for
a busy and productive year. https://incommon.org/federation/all-entities.html

ECAR's Identity Management in Higher Education, 2011 Report (published June 2, 2011) is now available to the public. You may access the 2011 report, methodology, survey instrument, case study, and more.

You can also hear a presentation on the finding from ECAR's Mark Sheehan in this archived IAM Online, presented by InCommon and EDUCAUSE.

Using Federated Identity for NSF- and NIH-Funded Cyberinfrastructure

Both the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health support a number of cyberinfrastructure projects around the country. Researchers and scientists at your campus may participate in one or more such projects (or be interested in doing so). But what are the policy and technical issues you face in helping your faculty and researchers seamlessly connect with such projects? How can federated identity help and, more importantly, what are the issues and barriers involved? We’ll present a case study from the NIH-funded Indiana Clinical and Translational Science Institute, and a roadmap to using InCommon and federated identity for participating in cyberinfrastructure projects funded by NSF.

Speakers

Bill Barnett, Director of Information Architectures, Indiana Clinical and Translational Science Institute, Indiana University

Von Welch, Deputy Director of the Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research, Indiana University

Host/Moderator

Tom Barton, Senior Director for Architecture, Integration & Security and Chief Information Security Officer, University of Chicago

Our goal as information security professionals is to support our constituents’ ability to take advantage of modern computing in safe and secure ways. As the definition of “security” grows to include privacy, identity management, physical security, information assurance, and more, it is imperative to share information and experiences with peers. Share your expertise and answer the call to propose at the Security Professionals Conference.
